Pre-season Practice Schedule
· Thursday, August 10- 8:30-11:00 and 1:00-3:30
· Friday, August 11- 8:30-11:00 and 1:00-3:30

Physicals- Physicals are now yearly and must be completed and a copy must be to the principal’s office by August 10. No physical means no practice.
Parent Permit Form- Athletes, managers, and parents must read and sign the Miller Rustler Athletic Handbook and return the consent form to the principal’s office. By signing, you are agreeing to the policies and procedures outlined in the athletic handbook set by the Miller School Board.
Expectations of Parents
o Be supportive and positive.
o Discuss your daughter’s goals and roles.
o Model good sportsmanship to athletes, teams, coaches, and referees.
o Monitor your daughter’s nutrition, rest, hydration, and overall health.
o Support your athlete’s decision to abide by the training rules set forth in the athletic handbook.
o Ask your athlete questions; learn the rules of the game of volleyball and her position on the team.
o Abide by the Miller High School Athletic Handbook in regards to Parent-Coach Communication.
o Follow policies in the MHS Athletic Handbook.
REMIND To be informed of Miller Volleyball information and messages, you need to join REMIND by texting to the number: “81010” and in the message, simply type: “@millervo”. You will then be prompted to reply to a question or two. You should then be notified of important Miller Volleyball announcements, events, information, and happenings.
Reimbursement for Individual Skills Camps- Any athlete grades 9-12 who attended any individual skill camps ( DSU, SDSU, NSU, USD, DWU, etc.) during the summer is entitled to a $50 reimbursement per camp. Please notify Coach DeBoer to receive your incentive.
Practices-
1. Dress appropriately- NO cut-off t-shirts or low tank tops! Shorts and spandex should be appropriate.
2. There will be some scheduled practices on holidays and days off from school. We will notify you as soon as possible about those times.
3. Do not miss practice! If absent from school and/or practice, please notify a coach.
4. Do not schedule appointments, work, or any other activity during practice times.
5. During the season, practices will run close to 6:00 every day, so make arrangements accordingly.
6. If you are not there, someone is there learning your job! The work is still getting done without you.
Social Media Guidelines No USE of cell phones in locker rooms.
School Absences- Follow the handbook and if you are gone the day of a match to an appointment, sick, or funeral, etc., you must receive PRIOR permission to play that day from the principal. Be in school the morning after an event.
Travel- Parents must speak to a coach in person at an out of town event to take their own athlete home with them and sign the form. Parents cannot take another player home with them. If you expect to participate, you must ride the bus to the event.
Footwear- Volleyball shoes are strongly recommended. No team shoe.
Dress Code- For home and away matches, the players usually dress up appropriately and respectfully.
Uniforms and Spandex- The school provides uniforms and spandex which are SDHSAA legal and need to be worn as such.
Stat Keepers- C team and JV players are required to do statistics at all varsity matches and Saturday varsity tournaments. This helps to learn the technical, tactical, and statistical parts of the game!
Match workers- Varsity players will referee and line judge home junior high and c team matches at home.
C Matches- These matches are a great opportunity for our younger athletes to gain experience during match play as they prepare for the JV and Varsity level.
Bus Buddy- Each player will be a bus buddy and have a bus buddy for out of town matches. Please keep your gift appropriate and please do not spend more than $5 per event. Make it fun, special; not expensive.
Fire-Up’s- Team members/managers/coaches will plan “fire-up” activities on home-match days.
Regions- Coaches, sophomores, stats; SODAK 16- Juniors& parents; State- Seniors & parents
Handbook- Each player will receive a volleyball handbook containing information on program goals and philosophy, player expectations, practice rules and performance, schedules, offense, defense, attitude, etc.
Coach/Player Meetings- Each player has 1-3 personal one on one meetings with a coach throughout the season to discuss goals, strengths, areas to improve, questions, concerns, etc.
Captains- Each team has captains who are voted on by the members of the team. Captains should display leadership in the areas of role modeling, refocusing, reinforcing, reassuring, and reprimanding; good communication skills; extensive knowledge of the game of volleyball and the rules; and good sportsmanship. Everyone in the program is expected to display leadership qualities.
Statisticians and Managers- These positions are crucial to the effectiveness of the program. These people perform roles that are very important to the success of the team. These students will letter as part of the varsity program.
Injuries and pre-existing conditions- It is important for there to be communication to the coach from the athlete and the doctor on injuries and rehabilitation and on pre-existing conditions such as asthma, braces, concussions, allergies, medications, etc. These conditions should be self-monitored. In the event of an injury that requires a doctor visit, a prescribed note for return to activity is needed.
Team selection and playing time- Determining factors: position, skill level, skill execution, and skill consistency/productivity, athleticism, coachability, work ethic, attitude and effort in practice, cooperation, communication, and character. Physical tests and skill/drills tests will be done in practice to determine teams and positions.
Athletic Banquet and Awards- in May! Letters, chevrons, pins, and awards will be given.
Opportunity- There were many opportunities given to the athletes at MHS to prepare for the volleyball season and better themselves including spring club, open gyms, satellite camp, summer team camps, individual skill camps, etc. These are not “have-to’s; these are “get-to’s. Volleyball players aren’t made in the season; they are made in the oof season.

Cookie Dough Sales- National Top Sellers 2018: Miller Rustler Volleyball!!! Again this year everyone in the volleyball program will be involved in a fundraiser through Adrenaline Fundraising selling cookie dough. It has been a very successful fundraiser for us, and the money raised helps with varsity jackets, camp reimbursements, practice incentives, mileage to camps, registrations for team camps, fees for all-star games, team meals, tournament money, and traveling suits/team gear. This year’s incentive is team gear--- Under Armour crew neck sweatshirt and travel bag! Goal is 50!
